STIMULUS RESPONSE TEST

Audio visual installation designed and built in collaboration with three classically trained electronic musicians.

Clicks + cuts interface

When users entered the space they were greeted by a control panel inspired by old science fiction interfaces. When interacting with the interface, the users found they could manipulate the sounds and visuals within the 3D space.

MIDI keyboards were housed underneath, connected through hidden cables to Ableton, and Isadora to create live feedback between the user’s interaction, effects on the instruments and projected visuals.

The interface was constructed using a mix of hand and laser-cut ply and custom 3D printed slider caps all measured to fit the MIDI keyboards.

The audio “landscapes” were complimented by a mix of 3D animation, stop motion animation and AI-assisted animation, all made by us. When the musicians faded into a new audio landscape, so did the projected visuals, controlled by me VJing behind the scenes.

Similar to the audio, the visual effects were mapped to the MIDI interface, giving the participants live-interaction with what they see.

The screen was designed by myself and constructed out of 3×2 timber, semi-translucent polyester chiffon and cladded with stainless steel cable trays.

The musicians behind wore white, so that during certain frames, the visuals were projected onto them.
