University 2nd year competition brief for National Rail. Located in New Mills, Derbyshire.
Despite being the largest visiting group to New Mills, the visiting hiking community don’t spend much time within the town, instead using the station as a means to start the “Millenium Walk.” Therefore, many of New Mills’ craft community is struggling financially through losing out on a large visiting demographic.
Through first-hand research surveying with the community in New Mills, it was apparent most hikers weren’t aware of New Mill’s unique culture, due to none of the town’s artistic personality appearing in the station’s homogeneous design.
To encourage this integration of the hiking and craft communities, I propose a multi-functional market, workshop and grow space, designed to grab the hikers’ attention on their way to the millennium footpath. “Yarn bombed” trees act as way-finders. The space allows users to get involved in the craft making process, buy local produce and deliver it home.
