3d printing demolished buildings

This body of work explores the future materiality of the built environment, using demolition waste as a resource to curb the industry’s concrete consumption.

Demolition Biomorphs is a series of large-scale planters designed using parametric design, and constructed out of 3D printed Recycled Fine Aggregate (RFA) concrete. RFA is fine rubble from demolished buildings, crushed into sand – making up 50% of the concrete mix.

I initiated and led a 3D design project in collaboration with MMU Print City, using the UK’s only RFA concrete 3D printer, in the aim to exploring how we can make concrete use more sustainable.

We developed a novel fabrication method combining robotic 3D printing with an original technique to achieve internal overhangs, advancing the possibilities of form creation using this emergent technology.
